The appeal of indie music is similar to that of any other specifically to teenagers. The appeal comes from rebellion, all teenagers feel the need to be rebellious and it's about the age of 12-13 that they really start to get into music. At this age they will be new to the whole experience and in developing their views and tastes in music they will initially turn to the musicians themselves.
And what they are likely to see is images like these of artists. By analysing this picture its easy to see why they could be appealing to this age group, they're standing informally not in a straight line leaning on each other, hands in their pockets. All of this begins to work away to paint an image of rebellion, their clothes again aren't smart they're casual leather jackets, t-shirts, necklaces and even the sunglasses and their hair styles, they're messy, untidy as is their attitude. This kind of 'don't care' appearance sparks an idea of rebellion which strongly appeals to teenagers and people of a young age.
Psychometric Profiling
As with all music, it is listened to by its audience for leisure purposes, they listen to it in order to relax and un-wind. This can be by yourself through headphones, on the radio whether on the go or casually around the home. It can also be enjoyed with friends as a group particularly when considering a live show or concert where thousands of fans will gather to enjoy the music.
On the whole music is a very diverse form of media we have created many outlets for it over the years, as I have already mentioned through the radio which is also available on hand held devices nowadays like phones or Ipods as well as mp 3 files which are accessible at any time you wish. Music is now enjoyable for any person in any place and at any time.
The majority of this information was gathered from a group study, a focus group that helped me to identify the characteristics of people in the audience that specifically enjoy the indie genre. I shall continue to use my focus group in other aspects of my project, this will help me to make my work more appealing.
To conclude my primary target audience for my magazine is teenagers, ideally between the ages of 14 and 19 who are interested in music, specifically the indie genre. They'd be interested in festivals, concerts and live shows of their favourite band.
The secondary audience may be 19 to 25 years of age, these people would be continuing fans of the genre and probably interested in reading interviews with their favourite bands.
